Behind the Design

For Nike Color Designers, their job is to create some of the most iconic color ways. Back in the early 2000’s, Nike Sportswear launched Japan exclusive Dunks that became one of the most coveted color ways of that time. Viotech, referring to the vibrant violet hue, made its return on another Nike classic in the recent Air Max 90 release. As copywriter, my job was to tell the story of the Viotech color way and give insight into the creative thinking process behind some of the most loved sneakers.

“Back in the early 2000s, we used to make Japan exclusives, and at that time, there was a lot of energy around the Dunk. So the team out there came up with the Viotech colorway, also known in Japan as Crazy Dunks.”

“As color designers, when we looked at the 90 for the anniversary, we were thinking, ‘What could this shoe look like along with some of the other iconic colorways of Nike’s history?’ And of course we went to Viotech and it was a match made in heaven.”
